The ASPIRA Association, the nation’s largest national Latino organization and the only one dedicated exclusively to education, today announced the release of its Youth Development Program Mobile App, developed with the generous support of the Verizon Foundation. The App, available in the Apple App Store) and Google Play, allows youth across the country to access ASPIRA’s award winning, comprehensive Youth Development curriculum and extensive youth development educational resources from anywhere, at any time, from any device.

ASPIRA has long recognized the importance of the use of technology and the Internet in reaching Latino youth and of providing technology-based educational tools to young people to increase their educational attainment and advancement. Over 20 years ago, ASPIRA launched its first technology initiative and since has been a leader in the use of technology for Latino students and teachers. Over the last several years, with the support of the Verizon Foundation, ASPIRA has developed a host of programs to provide low-income Latino youth and families with access to the state-of-the-art technologies, technology literacy programs, and innovative content that engages and motives our students every day. Today, the development of the Youth Development Program Mobile App is a major step in increasing access to ASPIRA’s signature program.

ASPIRA is well aware that, increasingly, the most effective way to reach Latino youth is through their mobile devices.

ASPIRA’s Youth Development Mobile App resources include educational materials and a self-paced curriculum consisting of over 35 modules on topics ranging from decision- making, building self-esteem, conflict resolution, leadership and effective communications, to study habits, career selection, selecting a college, and the college admissions process. It combines text, games, interactive content, and extensive use of video in each module. Students are able to select whatever modules they are interested in and complete them at their own pace. Though the App, ASPIRA is able to follow the student’s progress through the curriculum to provide feedback and support when needed.

“We are tremendously proud to have partnered with the Verizon Foundation for so many years to promote access and increased use of technology tools that our students will need to thrive in the 21st century economy and this is, especially many low income inner-city Latino youth we serve,” said Ronald Blackburn Moreno, President and CEO of ASPIRA. “Our Aspirantes (ASPIRA youth) have benefitted enormously from the opportunities that technology provides to enhance their education and enrich their lives. Verizon’s support of ASPIRA clearly demonstrates its strong commitment to the Latino community and to Latino youth. We are very grateful to the Verizon Foundation for enabling ASPIRA to continue being a leader in providing vital technology tools to our youth, added Blackburn-Moreno.
